Lawmakers try to water-down the pay freeze

Former Virginia Congressman Tom Davis said federal employees are on the chopping block because they are easy prey. Davis, now a director with Deloitte and Touche, said a letter from the Washington-D.C. area delegation could impact the potential two-year pay freeze the White House is proposing. The eight House members say feds are being targeted unfairly to help reduce the deficit.

Congress has diverse paths to make the pay freeze law

One expert sees the most likely avenue to pass the White House's proposal is by adding language to a continuing resolution. Qorvis's Stan Collender said now is the time for employees, contractors and unions to make their concerns about the pay freeze heard.

Average time to hire a new fed cut by 70 days

OPM said its goal is to get the average hire in their agency in 80 days. One way the agency will continue to bring down the average time is through a new set of applicant assessment tools. The first will launch in January for accountants and financial analysts.

FEHB premiums to increase by 7.2 percent in 2011

OPM said the rise in costs is lower than the industry standard. Employees who choose family coverage will see an increase of $22.90 a month. Open season starts Nov. 8.

More changes at SSA: CIO resigns; OPM's Zielinski returns

Frank Baitman will resign as CIO from the agency in August. His decision comes a few weeks after agency commissioner reorganized the agency's IT functions. OPM's Bill Zielinski also is returning to SSA to be the San Francisco regional commissioner.
