OMB launches PortfolioStat to reduce commodity IT spending

Agencies have to meet a series of milestones starting in June to eventually migrate two commodity IT functions to shared services or strategic sourcing contracts. Air Force has new plan to increase small business contracting

The service will use both penalties and incentives to get their program offices and large businesses to award more prime and subcontracts to small firms. The Air Force issued a new small business improvement plan that details three goals to increase both the percentage of contracts and dollars going to small companies.

Legislative changes needed to make bigger dent in improper payments

Navy links cyber workforce training to commercial certifications

Navy CIO Terry Halvorsen issued a policy making IT security training provided by the services to sailors and Marines equitable to commercial accreditations. He said the department shouldn't have to pay for civilian education courses when DoD programs work just as well.

FCC, NIST leading fight against 'zombie armies'

A new Internet Botnet Group will bring together federal and industry experts to try to stem the tide against botnet attacks. Experts estimate one in 10 computers are controlled by bad actors using malicious software to attack organizations. Air Force is next to move to DoD enterprise email

The military's chief information officer, Teri Takai, said after the Army completes its migration to DISA's email-as-a-service, the Air Force will be next. She said the Navy also is in discussions to move to the cloud. DoD soon will release a new cloud computing strategy and standards guide for industry.
