New cyber strategy coordinates $1B in R&D efforts

The White House released the new plan to focus on four broad areas to improve cybersecurity in the government and in the private sector. Howard Schmidt, the White House cyber coordinator, said agencies will issue RFPs and RFIs to meet the strategy's goals.

Senate begins work on FISMA update

Lieberman said a congressional staff is reviewing draft legislative language of the comprehensive cybersecurity legislation, which includes an update to the 2002 Federal Information Security Management Act. Sen. Reid promised to work on a cyber bill during the early part of the Senate session in 2012.

White House grading agency cyber progress

Deputy secretaries now get quarterly scorecards on how their agency is meeting four IT security priorities, including continuous monitoring of agency networks and secure identity cards. Howard Schmidt, the White House cyber coordinator, said the goal is to increase accountability and make sure agencies are putting enough focus on these areas. Schmidt said he is also developing priorities for 2012, which includes getting cybersecurity legislation passed.
