Congress has made clear in at least two federal laws that it thinks military members should be able to vote in state, local and federal elections no matter where they are. But a large group of the House of Representatives is still worried that's not the case. They want GAO to take a fresh look at the Federal Voting Assistance Program, the DoD office that facilitates overseas voting programs. Federal News Radio's Jared Serbu shares this and other news in this week's edition of Inside the DoD Reporter's notebook.

Matt Boehmer, Director, Federal Voting Assistance Program

It's estimated that between 1 and 7 million Americans live overseas. That's admittedly a pretty broad range, and the lack of precise data is causing consternation at a small Defense Department office. The Federal Voting Assistance Program helps all U.S. citizens overseas, regardless of their military affiliation, to vote. But first, it has to find them. Matt Boehmer, director of the Federal Voting Assistance Program, explained FVAP's challenges to Federal Drive hosts Tom Temin and Emily Kopp.

DoD encourages early voting

The Defense Department has marked the week of Oct. 1 as Absentee Voting Week. It's urging service members living overseas to register to vote and to take care of absentee balloting while there's still time for mail to make its way to and from local election jurisdictions.

Federal voting program's objective: Make itself obsolete

Even in the 21st century, it can still be awfully tough to vote in an election if you're thousands of miles from your local polling place. Making sure such voters can cast ballots in federal elections is the mission of the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP), a Defense Department office that offers assistance not just to military personnel, but to any U.S. citizen who needs help casting a ballot from overseas.
