Bin Laden Sought Nukes

Osama Bin Laden did seek nuclear weapons. In an exclusive interview with The Nation newspaper online Pakistani Scientist Sultan Bashir Mahmood, a retired director general of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission said Bin Ladin did ask him about getting nuclear technology. But he said he told a firm no and Bin Laden did not ask again. Mahmood said he told bin Laden that establishing an infrastructure and gathering a team of scientists to accomplish the task was not possible. The meeting took place before 9-11.

Agencies reduce energy usage by 12.4 percent in 2008

All but three departments met the goal to cut down the amount of energy they use by 9 percent. Agencies also expected to spend more than a billion dollars in 2009 on energy efficient projects. GSA's new rule goes into effect today requiring new leases to have an Energy Star rating.

Federal R&D efforts could get boost

NSF, NIST and Energy continue to receive increases on way to doubling budget by 2017. Overall, R&D across government increases only slightly. OSTP will create a dashboard to measure effectiveness of federal R&D efforts.
