Two New York men were arrested in a sting after police witnessed them trying to buy guns and grenades. Algerian-born Ahmed Ferhani, 26, and Moroccan-born Mohammed Mamdouh, 20, bought three pistols, ammunition and an inert grenade after a seven-month sting. At a news conference, New York Police commissioner Ray Kelley said "Farhani also expressed interest in bombing the "Empire State Building." The plot unraveled Wednesday. It was the 13th planned attack by Islamist militants on New York City since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
It's been four years since the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs launched the Federal Recovery Coordinator Program, designed to expedite the process for wounded vets to get the care and services they needed.
The Secretary of the Army said Wednesday that the service agreed with most of the recommendations of a blue ribbon panel on reforming its acquisition process. Secretary John McHugh told Congress the Army was moving forward with 63 of the 76 recommendations.
Leaders in the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments say a new system that will let them jointly evaluate the disabilities of wounded servicemembers is a vast improvement over old procedures, but it will take another year or two before they can meet their goal of evaluating disabilities within 300 days.
