The end-of-year holiday shopping season always seems to suck in a torrent of counterfeit merchandise, everything from faux Louis Vuitton baggage to fake car tires. It's also when federal agencies charged with stopping trade in counterfeits swing into high gear. A group of federal partners team up with industry and nonprofit organizations to warn consumers of holiday shopping scams. Bruce Foucart is the Acting Director of the Intellectual Property Rights Center within Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He joined Tom Temin on the Federal Drive to explain why they've stepped up their effort.

DHS improving aim to stop counterfeits at the borders

The Homeland Security Department is taking a two-pronged approach to protecting the federal supply chain. The first addresses the DHS mission cargo crossing into the U.S. The second is an interagency effort to ensure the government is working together on investigations. DHS said seizures of counterfeit goods at the border increased by 20 percent in 2011.

Cyber Monday counterfeiting crackdown highlights agency collaboration

The Justice Department and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement led a government-wide effort to stem the flow of counterfeit products. The White House launched a public-service campaign to let citizens know the impact of fake products on the economy. The Senate passed more stringent rules for DoD and its vendors to make sure military parts are original.

Justice Dept. cracks down on sites selling counterfeits

The Justice Department, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the FBI have teamed up to take 150 websites that are alleged to have sold counterfeit products.
