Federal unions claim sneak attack in unemployment insurance deal

Two federal unions, the American Federation of Government Employees and the National Treasury Employees Union, say lawmakers removed the increase in federal employee contributions from the payroll tax extension, but added it to the unemployment insurance extension, which is part of the overall deal. The unions say if the provision becomes law, feds would see a pay decrease while everyone else would see an increase.

House committee takes up bill cutting federal retirement benefits

Federal unions and some lawmakers have lambasted a proposed bill that would make changes to federal retirement benefits. The "Securing Annuities for Federal Employees Act of 2012" is set to go before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Tuesday for a markup session, in which lawmakers will be able to introduce amendments.

Union renews call for extending mass-transit tax benefit

The National Treasury Employees Union has renewed its call for Congress to renew an expansions of a mass-transit subsidy that expired at the end of last year. The union said it supports passage either through a stand-alone bill or through a package of nearly 70 temporary tax breaks, known as extenders.

CBO: Feds earn 16 percent more in pay, benefits than private-sector workers

Federal employees are paid 16 percent more in total compensation a combination of pay and benefits than their private-sector counterparts, according to a new Congressional Budget Office report. The pay and benefits gap was not evident across the board, but stratified by educational attainment.

Feds plan to shell out more money to get to work

Without Congressional action, the public transit benefit that many federal employees use to take the subway, bus or vanpool to work will decrease on Jan. 1 from $230 to $125 per month. Feds said, for the most part, they'll continue to use mass transit even if it costs them more to get to work.
