The federal government is taking two steps forward on ways to strengthen cyber networks for both the public and private sector. The House of Representatives passed two bills to strengthen information sharing in the private sector. The Office of Management and Budget is asking for public input on ways to overhaul the Federal IT Acquisition Reform Act. Chris Smith is vice president of technology for AT&T Government Solutions, and former chief information officer of the Agriculture Department. A flurry of cybersecurity bills passed through Congress after six years of no legal progress at all on the cyber front. Individually, none of the five cyber bills stand out above the rest. That's according to Chris Smith, vice president of for technology at AT&T Government Solutions, and former chief information officer of the Agriculture Department. DHS wants to ride commercial wave for interoperable radio network

After a decade of unsuccessful attempts, including the Justice Department's Integrated Wireless Network, the Homeland Security Department wants to leap forward with technology by using commercial 4G networks to connect law enforcement agencies. DHS created a joint program office to lead the effort. The approach is part of OMB's shared services initiative for agencies to work together on big programs.
