Senate committee seeks expert testimony on DoD budget

The Senate Budget Committee examined the FY 2013 budget request for the Defense Department Tuesday. Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) said providing funding for national security is the "single most important responsibility" of lawmakers and the government. Three expert witnesses also testified.

National Guard, Reserves to play key role in reducing size of military

The National Guard and Reserve will be key to implementing the Pentagon's plans for "reversible" cuts to military ground forces, the Defense Department's top policy official said Monday. DoD is still trying to figure out the best ways to keep at least part of the reserve component in an operational status after 10 years of war.

Details about supercommittee cuts remain elusive

With a week until the deficit panel's deadline, Bill Frenzel, a guest scholar of economic studies at the Brookings Institution, said details about what will be cut and by how much remain up in the air. "At the point, we don't know where any of these axes are going to fall," he said.
