DoD hunting for value, innovation not just lowest price

When it comes to lowest price, technically acceptable policies, the Defense Department wants more than "acceptable" for its acquisition services. Even with looming sequestration forcing DoD to stretch financially, Frank Kendall, undersecretary of Defense acquisition, technology and logistics, said the department must incentivize contractors to provide better value as well as best prices.

Billionaire entrepreneur and founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk, is breaking a major unwritten rule in government contracting. He's suing his customer. SpaceX is suing the Air Force after the department awarded a satellite launch contract to a joint business between Lockheed Martin and Boeing. Brett Lambert is former assistant secretary of Defense for Manufacturing and Industrial Base Policy. He spoke on In Depth with Francis Rose about how common this is within the defense contracting community.

Pentagon struggles to secure a supply chain it no longer dominates

Congress has told the Pentagon to stem the tide of suspected counterfeit parts that ultimately end up in military technology systems. First though, DoD has to come to grips with the fact that it can't simply mandate change to an industrial base it once controlled.

DoD to create map of defense industry

The Pentagon said it needs a much clearer picture of the subcontractors beneath the top tier of prime vendors it works with every day. DoD is trying to create a comprehensive map of the entire defense industry so it can keep critical suppliers healthy during an expected period of industry consolidation.
