DoD, VA encouraged to do more for returning soldiers

The secretaries of the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs testified about how the two agencies are collaborating to make it easier for military members to return to civilian life. Members of the Armed Services and Veterans Affairs House committees questioned them about various programs designed to help the process.

Social Security disability claims progress threatened by state furloughs

After decades of neglect and what one official describes as "severe underfunding", Social Security Administration officials are finally seeing progress in reducing a huge backlog of claims for disability benefits. This, after recent infusions of staff, technology, and money. However, that progress is now threatened by another, more pressing problem: the furloughs of state disability claims reviewers, whose salary is partially paid for by federal funds.

Bill proposes housing aid for vets who take online courses

SSA staying on top of claims increase

Commissioner Astrue tells House committee that despite the recession, the agency still plans on reducing its disability claims backlog. SSA using a combination of technology, new employees and improved processes to continue on the path to eliminate its hearings backlog by 2013. State agency furloughs, however, are causing additional challenges with the log jam of claims.
