The secretaries of the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs testified about how the two agencies are collaborating to make it easier for military members to return to civilian life. When agencies get money through appropriations, the next step is to push it to the programs and projects that need it. But the VA may be having some problems doing so.
After decades of neglect and what one official describes as "severe underfunding", Social Security Administration officials are finally seeing progress in reducing a huge backlog of claims for disability benefits. This, after recent infusions of staff, technology, and money. However, that progress is now threatened by another, more pressing problem: the furloughs of state disability claims reviewers, whose salary is partially paid for by federal funds.
The chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee wants to give returning vets who take classes online some parity with those who go to brick-and-mortar schools.
