  • The National Institute of Standards and Technology has been tapped to coordinate the interagency National Initiative for Cyber Education. The initiative hopes to solve education, training and public awareness problems laid out by the Cyberspace Policy Review. The initiative lays out a four part plan to improve cyber security. First the program wants DHS to promote cybersecurity risks to the public at large, second they want the Department of Education and the Office of Science and Technology Policy to ensure our education system can expand its scientific engineering and market leadership in cybersecurity technology. Third they want OPM to create new strategies to recruit cybersecurity employees and finally they want agencies across the government to better train the current workforce on cybersecurity measures.
  • Cyber crime on the downswing, according to Verizon’s top Internet security expert Peter Tippet, who says computer breaches are starting to level off. Tippet, cited in ITWire.com, says that by 2020, life will be notably better in the computer world. He expects some of the improvements to be fueled, in part, by better cloud security and better laws.
  • Nominations for the Government Information Security Leadership, or GISLA Awards are now open. The awards are given out annually by the (ISC)2 U.S. Government Advisory Board to those who do exceptional work in the information security world. Nominations are being accepted in the following categories: Workforce Improvement; Process/Policy Improvement; Technology Improvement; Community Awareness; and Federal Contractor.
