Transportation Department scrambles to fend off furloughs

February 26, 2010 - 9:00pm

Federal News Radio has learned federal Transportation Department officials are scrambling to find ways to keep their workers from being furloughed next week.

The Senate failed to pass a federal transportation bill today.

A DOT spokeswoman tells Federal News Radio that Kentucky Senator Jim Bunning put a hold on the bill, blocking funding for programs under DOT supervision, including the Federal Highway Administration, the National Traffic Safety Administration, and the Federal Motor Carrier Administration.

The spokeswoman says all DOT workers should report for work as usual on Monday, and that DOT managers will work through this weekend to keep funding in place to prevent any furloughs.

Tuesday is technically the deadline for an extension of the Act. But, sources tell Federal News Radio the Senate is likely to vote for cloture on Monday, taking a final vote later in the week.
