Cloud computing facing pushback

In the wake of recent high-profile hackings and leaks, federal managers are reconsidering a move to the cloud. Learn more in today\'s Cybersecurity Update.

The push for cloud computing is getting some pushback. The New York Times reports that not all federal managers are sold on the idea of cloud computing, and some see the cloud as being one way to provide more business to large contractors like Amazon, Google, and Lockheed Martin.

The biggest concern is security. In July, the Pentagon said it had suffered its largest breach, in which hackers obtained 24,000 confidential files. But agencies are required to comply with the federal government’s “Cloud First” policy.

Still, online cloud systems can be disrupted. In April, Amazon’s cloud service had technical problems that impacted a number of private sector Web sites. Amazon also manages Treasury’s main site; it has introduced a cloud service specifically for government clients. The International Data Corporation says that overall spending on cloud computing is growing five times as fast as it is for traditional corporate technologies.
