Federal pay debate revolves around level of education

The federal pay debate is back with a vengeance.

In a recently released report, the Congressional Budget Office found federal employees earned more in federal pay and benefits than their private sector counterparts.

However the results vary greatly by the education level of employees. For example federal workers with only a high school diploma earned 21 percent more than in the private sector, while pay for people with bachelor’s degrees was roughly equal. And, in fact, federal employees with advanced degrees actually earned 23 percent less than their private-sector counterparts.

Tom Shoop, the editor-in-chief of Government Executive magazine, joined In Depth with Francis Rose to discuss what the new numbers mean.
