There are two things you must do to make sure your spouse is covered under the FEHB program if you die:

First, you have to be enrolled! Even if your private-sector spouse has a better health care plan now, that’s no guarantee he or she will always have access to it. In fact, the odds are they won’t have health care later in life if they’re not a fed.

Secondly, be sure to elect a survivor annuity for your spouse. Without both of these, they will lose FEHBP eligibility forever.
