The Senate Budget Committee examined Tuesday the fiscal-year 2013 budget request for the Defense Department.

Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), in his opening remarks, said providing funding for national security is the “single most important responsibility” of lawmakers and the government.

“But given the long-term fiscal crises that we confront, every area of the budget has to come under scrutiny,” Conrad added. “Every area has to come under scrutiny. And I believe we’re going to have to find more savings in the core defense budget.”

Three expert witnesses also testified:

Lt. Gen. David W. Barno (Ret)
Senior Adviser and Senior Fellow
Center for a New American Security

Dr. Michael E. O’Hanlon
Senior Fellow
Brookings Institution

Dr. James Jay Carafano
Director of the Allison Center for Foreign Policy Studies
The Heritage Foundation
