2013 AGA National Leadership Conference

The 2013 Association of Government Accountants National Leadership Conference is being held Feb. 12-13 in Washington, D.C. Federal News Radio attended the event and spoke with several of the key speakers ahead of their respective panel discussions.

The Government Accountability Office is releasing a list no agency wants to find itself on. The High Risk List names federal programs prime for waste, fraud, abuse, mismanagement or reform. The Postal Service, the military supply chain, Medicare and Medicaid, and 27 other areas were on the last one published in 2011.

Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, the head of GAO, says fixing these problems is the smartest thing agencies can do as they prepare for potential budget cuts under sequestration. He also told us how GAO itself is preparing for sequestration.

The White House is warning across-the-board budget cuts that could take effect next month would devastate the federal government. Under sequestration, civilian agencies would have to cut 9 percent from the remainder of this year's budget. Pressure is on agency financial folks to figure out what to slice.

The Recovery, Accountability and Transparency Board has a new mission: It will track the federal money spent on Hurricane Sandy relief efforts along the East Coast. It will ferret out waste, fraud and abuse. The board was created three years ago to oversee the federal economic stimulus program. That task done, it was supposed to disband later this year. But its success has earned it this new lease on life.
