DoD to use iris scans, fingerprints for building security
The Mark Center soon will require employees to provide a fingerprint or iris scan along with the CAC card to enter the facility. The Pentagon is next to implement biometric factors for physical access control. The Army also is looking at where biometrics could impact mission and business functions.
Army calls for proposals on protective underwear
The Army issued a request for proposals to develop protective underwear for warfighters. The boxer-style briefs would provide projection from improvised explosive devices.

Army aims for more speed, security with new IT network standards
The Army has released the implementation plan for how it will get its networked systems to a state it calls the "common operating environment." The strategy is designed to phase out stovepiped systems and begin building technologies to a common set of open standards.
Army on track to double President's energy-saving contracting goal
Army officials announced the service is on track to more than double a Presidential goal for investments in energy efficiency projects. Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Energy and Sustainability Richard Kidd, said the Army would likely invest $800 million in performance-based contracts over the next two years to realize energy savings and efficiencies at its multitude of bases and facilities.
Army: PTSD treatable; some diagnosed return to war
It is still not known if the soldier accused of killing 17 Afghans was ever diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder _ but even if he had been, that alone would not have prevented him from being sent back to war.

The Government Accountability Office says that even while the Army has made some strides toward improving its pay practices, the service is a long way off from the kind of data integrity independent experts would need to see in order to green light the systems as audit-ready.
