Senate passes bill to delay health care compliance deadline

Chief information officers in the healthcare industry might have a new deadline to comply with an international code system for tracking diseases and medical diagnoses.

The Senate passed a bill to delay the compliance deadline for ICD 10. It’s a collection of thousands of codes that healthcare providers can use to study trending diseases and keep an eye out for strange medical issues. The original deadline was Oct. 1, but the Senate voted to push it back to October 2015.

Healthcare IT News reports some healthcare providers are glad for the extension. But the American Health Information Management Association says it’s wasting millions of dollars for providers that raced to meet the original compliance deadline.
