Federal CIO VanRoekel details his 'first' priorities
Federal CIO Steven VanRoekel wants the government to move toward a share-first policy where agencies share IT before buying new. He also introduced his "Future First" initiative to standardize technology development and adoption across the government. This was VanRoekel's first major policy speech since taking over as CIO in August.

In the coming weeks, Defense CIO Teri Takai will issue a memo detailing a new strategy for bringing existing consolidation and standardization efforts together. Industry group warns of bleakest IT budget in 17 years
The government's IT budget hasn't been squeezed this hard since Forrest Gump was on the big screen in 1994. In the next five years, agencies will focus their spending on mission-critical technology. They're also finding ways to save money though nontraditional contracts and IT consolidation, a survey by the industry group TechAmerica Foundation found.
