The National Science Foundation is trying to turn massive amounts of random data into usable information. It’s awarded $10 million to the University of California Berkeley as part of the government’s Big Data Initiative. Professor Michael Franklin says tackling the big data problem isn’t just about making machines do more than they already do. He says the data analysis tool they plan to create will harness the power of algorithms, people, and machines.
