McKeon against proposals to cut defense spending

Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) said spending in defense now will save money later.

There is yet another indication that the deficit reduction commission’s recommendation for cuts in defense spending is dead on arrival in the next Congress.

Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), the incoming chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said spending money now will save the Pentagon money later, one reason he’s against the deficit reduction commission’s proposal to cut defense spending…

McKeon made the remarks in a sit-down with reporters on Capitol Hill today.

McKeon also said he supports a second engine variant for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and he’s confident the President would not veto an appropriations bill that included funding for it. He acknowledged the F-35 program has had some setbacks but said cutting it back would be shortsighted.
