There’s a new resource to help you gauge the security risk of using different types of popular software like Web browsers and media players.

Brian Krebs of Krebs on Security says just counting the number of known vulnerabilities in software is not a reliable measure of security. New software fact sheets from Secunia will help fill that information gap.

The fact sheets list numbers of vulnerabilities but also classify each vulnerability and report on how long it took for patches to be made.

Krebs says that’s important in understanding the comparative danger of using different software – like Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera.

Krebs says the reality is that computer crooks don’t care which browser you’re using. They rely on people using outdated software, especially browser plugins like Java, Adobe Flash and Reader.
