Dashboards: coming soon to an agency near you?
Given that Obama CIO Vivek Kundra is creating a “dashboard” to track federal IT systems, we had a fascinating discussion about dashboards — what are they, how they can be used, and how difficult it is to implement them.

VA official on privacy and IT security
This is based on report by the Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board (ISPAB), which makes recommendations on information security and privacy. The report, which you can read here (Scribd Flash version or PDF version), had a number of interesting recommendations including the creation of both a government chief privacy officer and agency chief privacy officers. It also recommends a re-examination of the Privacy Act of 1975, given that a few things have changed since 1975. The chairman of the privacy advisory board, Dan Chenok, senior vice president at Pragmatics and chairman of the Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board was on the Federal Drive. Hear that here… Earlier on the Daily Debrief, we spoke to Ari Schwartz, vice president and chief Ari Schwartz is Vice President and COO of the Center for Democracy and Technology. Hear that here. But I also thought it was important to get insights from a government person on the panel, and Jaren Doherty, the associate deputy assistant secretary for cyber-security at the Department of Veterans Affairs, was one of the government members of the board. Hear that conversation here.
