Chief of Staff
Government Printing Office
A huge business change is progress at the Government Printing Office. Mostly it revolves around a lot less printing. Managing that transition is one of the focuses of the GPO's Fiscal 2014 through 2018 Strategic Plan. Andy Sherman, chief of staff at the GPO, says the forming function that put the GPO in business in the first place is the driver of the change.
Senior Executives Association
The Presidential Rank Awards aren't canceled this year. But they aren't on either. The White House canceled the awards last year, but so far this year no clues about whether or not the Administration will bring them back, or recognize winners in a different way. Carol Bonosaro, president of the Senior Executives Association, says she's gotten no response.
Federally Employed Women
Today's vote in the House passing the budget deal helps some federal workers for the first time in three years. Blue collar feds will get a raise of 1 percent. It's the first of many votes in this session of Congress that will impact voting records. Janet Kopenhaver is Washington representative for Federally Employed Women. Her organization has a scorecard out that shows legislators who fight for the federal workforce.
Assistant Deputy Commandant for Programs and Resources
The Marines Corps is celebrating a favorable financial audit opinion from its fiscal 2012 statement. It is a major step for the Defense Department on the way to audit readiness. Ann-Cecile McDermott is assistant deputy commandant for resources and the fiscal director for the Marine Corps.
Allen Federal Business Partners
More top executives head out the door at the General Services Administration. Dennis Papula, the director for management and strategy in GSA's Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies, is going to the Federal Trade Commission. And four others, including the deputy administrator and chief information officer, are leaving too. Larry Allen is president of Allen Federal Business Partners and author of the Week Ahead newsletter. This week, he says turnover at GSA raises some questions for contractors.
Federal News Radio
The Defense Department says it's making some progress on the challenge of analyzing data. It's in the early stages of standing up a cloud-based big data analytics platform called Acropolis. The new tool is already absorbing data from disparate systems across the Defense Department. Bill Keely, deputy chief technology officer for mission assurance at the Defense Information Systems Agency, talked about Acropolis with Federal News Radio's Jared Serbu.
Federal News Radio
Agencies are spending tens of millions of dollars less on travel and conferences after repeated scandals came to light in 2012. Some in Congress want to know how to ensure agencies will not go back to abusing the system in the future. They also want to make sure agencies aren't missing out on important opportunities either. Federal News Radio executive editor Jason Miller is back from Capitol Hill where the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee explored this balance.
