From Our Reporters:

  • The General Services Administration expects to fall farther behind on the maintenance of federal buildings due to a lack of funds in the fiscal 2013 spending bill. Executive Editor Jason Miller told In Depth about the ongoing maintenance and repair challenges GSA faces. (Read Jason’s report.)
  • The Agriculture Department is one of a few agencies that has special authorities to move money to help offset the cuts coming from sequestration. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has asked Congress for permission to now use that authority. Executive Editor Jason Miller told In Depth how USDA will apply these authorities and how agencies are dealing with the cuts. (Read Jason’s report.)
  • The Defense Department’s plan to start rolling out commercial mobile devices on DoD networks covers a lot of ground. But the central objective is to take the same commercial mobile technology that’s in use in virtually every business on the planet, and implement it in a way that’s secure enough for DoD. John Hickey is the mobility program manager for the Defense Information Systems Agency, the agency that will handle most of the implementation for the mobile rollout. He talked with DoD Reporter Jared Serbu on his On DoD radio show about how DISA will buy up-to-date devices for the entire Defense Department while ensuring they don’t create undue cybersecurity risks. (Jared’s full report will be available on the On DoD page soon.)
