Representative Gayle Harrell, from Stuart, Florida, was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000 where she proudly served for 8 years and was later re-elected back to the Florida House in 2010. A graduate of the University of Florida, Representative Harrell has a long history of public service. Gayle has served as president of many civic organizations such as Hibiscus Children's Center, the Barn Theatre, and the HPS - Helping People Succeed and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Hospice of the Treasure Coast and Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie County. The wife of longtime FMA member James Harrell, M.D., Representative Harrell has tremendous experience in the health care field, having served as the Healthcare Administrator to her husband's Ob. Gyn. practice for 19 year and established the Breast Imaging Center. She is currently President and CEO of Health IT Strategies, LLC.

Gayle is a nationally recognized leader in Health Information Technology and was appointed by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner to the national Health Information Technology Policy Committee as established under ARRA 2009 (Stimulus Bill). As a part of the Policy Committee she also was appointed to serve on the Health Information Exchange Work Group and the Privacy and Security Tiger Team. Gayle was one of four legislators nationally to serve on the National Governor's Association State Alliance for e-Health and also served on the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Healthcare Reform Committee. She was recognized as Legislator of The Year in 2011 by HIMSS.

Her experience in healthcare has made her a leader in setting healthcare policy for the State of Florida. As a member of the Florida House of Representatives, she has served as Chair of the Health and Human Services Access Sub Committee, the Healthcare Quality Committee, Healthcare General Committee, and the Healthcare Standards Subcommittee. Among her many awards she has received she was recognized by the Florida Medical Association as the Legislator of the Year in 2004.

She and her husband Dr. Harrell have 4 children, Stephanie, Jennifer, James, Jr., and Melinda, and 8 grandchildren, James, Jupiter, Justice, Nicole, Anna, Aaron, Tyler and Nicholas.
