The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery — the Smithsonian’s museums featuring Asian art — will ring in the new year by releasing their entire collections online to the public on Jan. 1. The majority of the 40,000 pieces have never been seen before by the public. Most will be available in high resolution. Courtney O’Callaghan is the galleries’ chief digital officer. She spoke with Tom Temin on the Federal Drive about this digital transition and the collection itself.
