Today the State Department is honoring foreign service employees and family members who went above and beyond their daily duties to help the communities in which they serve. Megan Gallardo is one winner of the Secretary of State Award for Outstanding Volunteerism Abroad. Until recently, she was stationed in La Paz, Bolivia. There she overcame some daunting challenges to help medical providers, trafficking victims and orphans.

The Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide (AAFSW) is a non-profit representing active and retired U.S. Foreign Service employees and their families. The organization’s 2013 Secretary of State Outstanding Volunteerism Abroad awards ceremony was this morning. Betsy Orlando is a foreign service officer and among the six selected winners of the SOSA award. Orlando is known as the “green queen” for her work providing environmentally sustainable technologies to Nigerians.

The Justice Department’s demonstration of identity management and access control is creating a thirst among other agencies. Other federal, state and local agencies are eyeing how they could use the concepts behind the back-end attribute exchange. Mike Kennedy is the executive for assured interoperability for the Program Manager of the Information Sharing Environment. He tells Federal News Radio Executive Editor Jason Miller why expanding the back-end attribute exchange would be easy.
