The departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs are funneling $107 million into new research on post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Officials hope it’s a solid investment in the future, when they know they’ll be treating at least a 250,000 troops and veterans with those conditions. Dr. Robert Jaeger is the director of deployment health research in the Veterans Affairs Office of Research and Development. He says the research focuses on finding biomarkers that could hold the key to better treatment.

The Navy is changing the way it fights in the air with its new F-35C. The controversial Lightning II joint strike fighter will have more speed, better sensor information and more durability. At least that’s what its proponents say. Capt. John Enfield is the Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron 101. He joins us now with results of some new tests.

Federal judges warn, budget cuts have slowed the judicial system, endangering public safety and forcing cuts that will have an impact long after sequestration ends. Chief judges at 87 federal courts describe the impact in a letter to Vice President Joe Biden. Chief Judge Loretta Preska of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York spearheaded the effort.

It started with binder clips. Writer-Editor Joseph Frankovic looked around his office at the Federal Register and saw tens of thousands of them. He hatched a plan to put all those clips to use. It soon grew into what is now known around the office as the Pausterity Project. That’s a combination of the words “austerity” and “posterity.”

The William Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies says it was able to avert some of the huge productivity losses other parts of the Pentagon felt during the six week furloughs. This is because of a flexibile work plan it already had in place. The Perry Center is one of three hundred organizations who just won the Alfred P Sloan Award for workplace flexibility from the Society for Human Resources Management. Jeff Murphy is the Center’s management services chief. He tells Federal News Radio’s Jared Serbu about the workplace flexibility programs they’ve implemented.
