A growing list of problems are confronting federal employees — budget cuts, furloughs, and the possibility of sequestration all over again in fiscal 2014, to name a few. But, imagine dealing with all of that and then having your house destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. That’s what happened to Roberto Arroyo, an IRS agent. He is one of the federal employees who has received assistance from the Federal Employee Education and Assistance fund, to help deal with his loss. Emily spoke to Arroyo as part of our ongoing series, the Face of Furloughs.

Come Oct. 1, many Americans will go online to buy health insurance through new federal and state exchanges. They will type their names, incomes and other personal information into online applications routed through a federal data hub. The government’s ability to keep that data secure will make or break Obamacare. A report from the Department of Health and Human Services’ inspector general reveals the agency is far behind in testing the security of the system. Kay Daly, the assistant inspector general for audit services at HHS, joined Emily to discuss the details of the report.

After years of delays, the trial of Fort Hood shooter Major Nidal Hasan began this week. He’s not the only one on trial. His case is testing the military justice system. For one thing, Hasan is representing himself. For another, he could get the death penalty but it’s happened rarely before in court martials. For insight, Emily spoke with retired Army Col. Lisa Windsor. She served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps and now works at the firm, Tully Rinckey.
