DoD updates base planning guidelines

Military bases tend to follow suburbia when it comes to development. While sprawl was in, it's now out of the latest Defense Department planning guidelines.

The Pentagon liked what it saw in newer suburban centers that promoted living, working and playing in the same area.

It envisioned new military bases that offered mass transit, a mix of housing near businesses and shops, and lots of trees and green space.

Federal Times reported this was the first update of the Department's planning guidelines in a quarter-century. DoD has more than 300,000 buildings.
