Navy studies effects of wind farms on radar

The Navy is joining with Maryland counties to study the effects of wind farms on radar.

The Easton Star Democrat reported Talbot County and the Patuxent Naval Air Station will jointly study the issue. The study was requested by the Navy. It will be paid for by the Defense Department’s Office of Economic Adjustment. Matching funds will come from Maryland counties close to the base. Chris Jarboe, a team leader for the Navy’s Atlantic Test Range, said large wind turbines can degrade radar performance when rotating blades produce Doppler effect. Flight squadrons often use the airport in Easton, Md., for training.
