House members can Skype into meetings

The House is loosening its Internet teleconferencing rules, allowing for Skype, but the Senate still can\'t hold meetings over Wi-Fi.

The House of Representatives is loosening its rules on Internet teleconferencing software.

But not the Senate.

The National Journal reports that Skype is still restricted there, in part, because the Senate doesn’t have a public Wi-Fi network.

The House side DOES have public Wi-Fi.

And, because of cybersecurity concerns, the House limits the use of Skype to that network.

The Senate does allow desktop video teleconferencing.

Still, some Senators are using Skype. Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch tells the National Journal that he uses Skype and he encourages his staff to use it, too.
