The Defense Department has detailed its plans for a new generation of long-range bombers. GovExec reports, DOD planners hope to have between 80 and 100 of the new planes in service by 2040. The existing B-1, B-2 and B-52 bombers would continue in service until then. The new planes would be able to deliver nuclear bombs to distant locations with or without onboard pilots. In its planning document, DOD says it expects the new aircraft to cost about $550 million each.
