The Navy has awarded Pratt & Whitney’s Military Engines division a modification to nearly one billion dollars in contracts for F-35 Joint Strike Force fighter engines. The previously awarded undefinitized contract action converts to a firm-fixed-incentive-fee/cost-plus-incentive-fee contract which will net the Navy two types of engines. It will buy 36 regular takeoff engines, 10 designed for Short Takeoff, Vertical Landing, and two spares. Engines for the Air Force and for the United Kingdom’s Navy are also included in the contract. Most of the work will be done in East Hartford, Connecticut. But 20 percent will be performed in Bristol, England. The Defense Department has made the F-35 its next generation of mainstay fighter. This contract combines purchases for the Department of the Navy ($638,956,839; 70.2 percent), the U.S. Air Force ($222,506,542; 24.45 percent) and the United Kingdom ($48,691,764; 5.35 percent).
