Data breaches top 100 in 2010

Data breaches are up, but fewer personal records were released.

Military and government agencies suffered 104 cyber security breaches that exposed personal information in 2010. That’s up from 90 the year before. Those figures come from a study by the Theft Resource Center. NextGov reports, even though breaches rose, the number of records actually released fell. Government, industry and the non-profit sector together reported 662 breaches. To be counted as a breach, an event must put at risk a person’s name plus other ID information such as Social Security or driver’s license number. In one case, a breach exposed records of 207 thousand Army reservists.
