Navy removes use of SSN on personnel site

The move is part of a larger transition from SSN use

The Navy has ended what some have called a fraud magnet that could lead to identity theft against service members. They’re no longer listing partial Social Security numbers on a public-facing Web site for promotions and other personnel messages. The move is part of a bigger Pentagon effort to stop identifying service members with Social Security numbers. DOD is working on a new system, but that won’t be ready until 2012.
