DoD encourages servicemembers to quit smoking

The Air Force Times reports that the DoD Alcohol and Tobacco Advisory Committee is launching an effort to get active members and veterans to kick the habit.

It’s time for those New Year’s resolutions — The Department of Defense is asking military members to kick their smoking habits in 2011.

The DoD Alcohol and Tobacco Advisory Committee says tobacco use impairs military readiness and results in serious health problems for service members.

The Air Force Times reports DoD is encouraging people to take advantage of tobacco cessation programs offered through TRICARE.

DoD says it’s sending the message to quit, not just to active-duty military but also veterans and their families.
