What do computer networks and social networks have in common? Interaction. The Department of Defense is taking a closer look at the science of complex interactions, like networking. Scientists at the Army Research Laboratory’s Network Science Division have found that warfare is permeated with networks, and that troops often have to deal with cultural, ideological and adversarial issues as they negotiate with civilians and local governments. The Army is looking into a technology known as “disruption-tolerant networking” to better understand the science of networking, whether with computers or humans.
