ELC 2010: ‘Highly interactive’ conference now in 20th year

The Executive Leadership Conference is underway and Tom Temin explains what\'s in store for Monday\'s coverage.

Leaders from all over the federal government and industry More than 850 attendees of the Executive Leadership Conference met in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, Monday to discuss new ways of doing business.

This year the conference’s theme is “Delivering Tranformation,” covering topics of accountability, transparency and collaboration.

Now in its 20th year, the problems agencies face now are very different from the past, said Federal News Radio’s Tom Temin.

Twenty years ago, agencies struggled with understanding personal computers and networks and deciding if everyone needed e-mail, Temin said. Today,

“Today it’s social media, rapid application development for mobile devices, how we deal with broadband for all the citizens, online collaboration,” Temin said. “But it still has the same themes of how to use the tools for the mission.”

ELC is different from other conferences in that people come not only to learn about topics but to “weigh in,” Temin said. Panels are “highly interactive,” he said.

Temin broadcast live Monday morning from ELC with interviews from leaders across federal government:

  • Jerry Johnston, geospatial information officer for the Environmental Protection Agency, explained how geospatial technology helps EPA meet its mission goals.
  • The safety of software bought by agencies is a growing concern. Joe Jarzombek, director for software assurance at the Department of Homeland Security, said agencies must enhance their due diligence.
  • Molly Moran, the Department of State’s senior new media advisor, described how State incorporates social media in diplomacy.
