Virginia fights JFCOM closing

Virginia\'s political leaders are heading to Washington, D.C., to press the military on the planned closing of the Joint Forces Command in Hampton Roads.

A delegation of Virginia’s political leaders is launching a campaign to try to save Joint Forces Command. Virginia governor Bob McDonnell is scheduled to meet with Defense Department officials this morning. At the same time, the Senate Committee on Armed Services will hold a hearing. Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced the closing of the joint military command back in August. The command employs nearly 6,000 people at its headquarters in Norfolk and Suffolk and generates nearly a billion dollars a year in spending. Virginia officials contend the military has not clearly outlined the reasons for the closing.
