The Defense Department is proposing a new policy to increase oversight of for-profit, online college degree programs. Under the proposal, DoD would hold the online programs to the same review process as schools that run traditional classrooms on military installations. DoD spends several hundred million dollars a year on tuition assistance. The move comes, largely, as a result of a Government Accountability Office report that criticized 15 popular for-profit schools for deceptive recruiting practices. Some of those had been endorsed by the military.
