Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates says the surge strategy in Afghanistan is beginning to work. He cited field assessments coming from the U.S. Commander in Afghanistan, General David Petreaus, as well the NATO commander. Gates said his personal impressions during a recent trip confirmed the field reports. Gates’ upbeat assessment comes as the Obama administration faces growing skepticism with the progress and direction of the war.
