A case in point is Great Britain had planned on buying the catapult-launch version of the F-35. But rising costs and delays caused Defence Secretary Philip Hammond to switch to the vertical takeoff version, Defense News reports.

The change in planes has prompted an overhaul of the way the U.K. manages construction of two new aircraft carriers. The Queen Elizabeth-class carriers will be the biggest warships ever built in England. The Royal Navy hopes to deploy the ships in 2020.
