Obama nominates Roth as next GSA administrator

President Barack Obama announced Thursday he was going to nominate Denise Turner Roth as the new administrator at the General Services Administration.

President Barack Obama announced Thursday he was going to nominate Denise Turner Roth as the new administrator at the General Services Administration.

Roth has been GSA’s acting administrator since February, when former Administrator Dan Tangherlini stepped down. Before that, she served as GSA’s deputy administrator.

“As Acting Administrator and Deputy Administrator, Denise led the General Services Administration to become more efficient, innovative and effective,” Obama said, in a release. “Denise is a capable leader whose experiences in management will serve our nation well. I thank Denise for agreeing to continue her public service and look forward to working with her in this important position.”

In a statement, Roth called the nomination a vote of confidence by the President in the ability of the men and women who work at that agency.

“I am honored to lead GSA in transforming the way our government serves the American people,” she said. “Today GSA is smarter and stronger, and I look forward to building on this momentum — creating new opportunities for the federal government and the nation.”

The Senate still needs to approve Roth’s nomination.

In her role as acting administrator, Roth consolidated GSA’s IT, HR, administrative and financial functions, which will save $200 million over the next eight years.

Before coming to GSA in March 2014, Roth worked in local government. From 2011 to 2014, she was the city manager for Greensboro, North Carolina, after serving two years as assistant city manager. Prior to that, she was vice president for governmental affairs at the Greensboro Partnership. She also served as district liaison for former Rep. Brad Miller (D-N.C.)

A graduate of George Mason University, Roth worked for former Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) and Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams (D).
