Three perspectives on big data and health analytics

January 13, 2015 — Today’s guests are Laura Bennett, business development at Sutherland Global Services, Dr. Liz Herman from Battelle, and Damon Davis, director of the Health Data Initiative IDEA Lab at the Department of Health and Human Services.

The best summary of today’s interview comes from Dr. Herman when she spontaneously came up with the hashtag #infoglut.

The federal government is at a point where it has megabytes and megabytes of healthcare data, but discerning what to do with it is becoming more and more difficult.

We started off the discussing with an overview of the short and long term strategies with dealing with large healthcare IT data stores.

Damon Davis highlighted the areas of liquidity of data, interoperability, and the value of Application Program Interfaces (API’s).

One of the conclusions is that listeners can get much more in depth information with face-to-face conversations.

One of the best approaches is to attend HiMSS chapter meetings.

During the interview Laura Bennett mentioned that the local HiMSS chapter, the National Capitol Chapter, would be having a discussion titled “Big Data and Advanced Analytics: Opportunities to Improve Population Health.” This event will take place on January 15, 2015 in Rosslyn.
