Agencies across government are changing their budget priorities as the money shrinks. That means your agency may have to get creative to provide training opportunities. Virginia Hill is national president of Young Government Leaders. She shared her Top 3 for 2015 on In Depth with Francis Rose. She says you shouldn’t wait for someone else to take the training lead.

Virginia Hill’s Top 3 for 2015

  1. Professional development opportunities for young feds: Training budgets are still tight, so we need to find creative ways to train and develop our young, new employees in government. YGL University provides in-person and remote learning opportunities to YGL members across the country. In 2015, we’ll host speakers on topics related to navigating your federal career, managing up and networking for success.
  2. Knowledge management: As seasoned workers start to take advantage of their retirement eligibility, we need to ensure that middle managers are ready to take on senior leadership roles, and new or junior employees — likely millennials — are ready to become supervisors and mid-level managers. Succession planning and knowledge management practices are vital to ensure that a “brain drain” doesn’t occur when people retire. YGL utilizes a formal mentoring program with the Senior Executives Association to promote knowledge transfer through mentorship.
  3. Employee engagement: Recent governmentwide surveys have shown that employee engagement in federal government is on the decline. Why is that? What can be done about it? YGL plans to do a survey of our members to find out what could keep them more engaged, and therefore, hopefully retain them in public service for a longer period of time. We need to do our part to ensure that government a fun and productive place to work!

In our special radio report, Top 3 for 2015, federal experts tell In Depth host Francis Rose what top three concepts, trends or priorities they believe will be important in 2015.
